Concierge on the Street: What’s Hot in the SoMa Art Scene?

Looking for a few new colorful galleries to hop around this summer? Start with our short list we rounded up after checking in with a few locals on what’s hot and upcoming in the SOMA art scene this summer.

What are some of your favorite SOMA art spots?

“SOMA’s newest and coolest boutique stay, the Hotel Zetta, has gotten a recent, edgy makeover thanks to graffiti artists from around the country. Swing by the already-colorful Zetta to peruse 27 walls of vibrant street art, open for public viewing.” – 7×7

111 Minna Gallery is in the business of Art and Leisure. The gallery showcases a unique blend of local and international artists, world class DJ’s, live performance, and film screenings in an elegantly urban and ever-changing 4,000 square foot space.

“If we are giving a shout out to a fellow SOMA gallery outside of our own, I’d have to say a favorite would undoubtedly be Rocha Art on Brannan. Good looking gallery with a strong and diverse artist line up and well run.” – Micah LeBrun, 111 Minna Gallery

Rocha Art, formerly Ian Ross Gallery, is breathing new life into SoMa with a “street art museum experience.” A major focus of Rocha Art is 1 Brush Initiative, which was founded with support from public works organization San Francisco Beautiful.

Andrea Schwartz Gallery was established in 1982 and has been in SOMA since its start – it’s definitely a safe bet if visiting the SOMA art scene. The current exhibition is of new works by Tom Bolles. It is such an inviting show as the entire gallery looks like a colorful candy store! Tom makes color field paintings with multiple layers of bright yet translucent acrylic paint.” – Amanda Baker, Andrea Schwartz Gallery

If art is your passion, venture just 1 mile from Jasper to Chinatown and discover the coolest art gallery in San Francisco underneath a dry cleaner. Et Al gallery shows contemporary work by emerging artists.

“In SOMA, ArtHaus is an award-winning contemporary gallery celebrating 20 years in San Francisco. Located in the Tech Corridor, at 411 Brannan Street, ArtHaus features quarterly exhibitions in both their Main and Project Galleries – focusing on the work of noteworthy Bay Area and New York Artists working in a variety of media. James Bacchi and Annette Schutz set themselves apart from other gallerists with their passion for museum-quality works presented in an accessible manner.” – Patter Hellstrom, Artist

“When you think “high-tech,” what comes to mind? Computers and microchips, sure. But how about art and athletics, robots and fashion? At our monthly Design Nights in the Autodesk Gallery in San Francisco, we take a theme—both new and unexpected—and explore how tech is transforming that industry. All with an open bar, food, music, and activities. Featured the first Thursday of the month, 6-10 p.m.” – Autodesk Gallery
