7 Reasons to Hit the Ferry Building this Summer

The historic Ferry Building Marketplace is a vibrant gathering where locals and tourists frequent for amazing food with locavore flare. On sunny days, you can snag a seat and settle in at the benches along the promenade in back, which face the stunning San Francisco Bay and looming Bay Bridge. Here are a few more reasons to hit the Ferry Building this summer:

The CUESA Ferry Plaza Farmers Market is open three days a week—Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays. On T and Th, the smaller markets occupy the front of the building along the Embarcadero; on Sat, the much larger market is held both in front of the Ferry Building and on the rear plaza overlooking the Bay. Mark your calendars for “Iron Chef Challenge” on Saturday, October 24, 2015 – 11:15am to 11:45am and enjoy samples from the International Culinary Center’s “Farm to Table” program.

You scream, I scream, we all scream for Secret Breakfast Ice Cream? There’s always room for ice cream and the rule “dessert last” does not apply at the Humphry Slocombe. The ever popular Blue Bottle Vietnamese Coffee Ice Cream was named one of the50 Treats to Eat Before You Die’, but the vanilla base with bourbon and corn flakes specialty, Secret Breakfast, is just as popular and delicious!

Come hungry and stop by the CUESA Classroom on August 15 from 11-11:45am for a cooking demo with Anjan Mitra featuring the seasonal bounty of the Ferry Plaza Farmers Market. CUESA’s pre-festival cooking demos are offered in partnership with Eat Drink SF, San Francisco’s annual food, wine, and spirits festival at Fort Mason Center on August 20-23. All demos take place in the CUESA Classroom (under the white tents in front of the Ferry Building) and are free to the public, with recipes and samples for all.

The Slanted Door was named the nation’s outstanding restaurant for 2014 by The James Beard Foundation, an award as prestigious as the Oscar for Best Picture. The grass-fed estancia shaking beef is a bestseller, but we also love their cellophane noodles with green onion, dungeness crab and sesame. They also have Prix Fixe menus featuring portions designed for family-style dining.

There’s nothing better than a jog along The Embarcadero followed by a New Orleans Coffee from the unofficial king of artisan coffee roasting, Blue Bottle Coffee, paired with caramelized Belgian waffle making the perfect love affair for food-conscious folks.

Indulge in Sunday brunch and beignets at Boulettes Larder for fine breakfasting while watching the ferries come and go. This open kitchen with a communal table where breakfast and lunch are served has an ever changing menu according to what is best in that moment.

Stop by for a taste, a talk, a tour by an experienced cheesemonger, and of course, a take-home treat or two from the Cowgirl Creamery Cheese Shop. The talking tour includes the story of Cowgirl Creamery, their experiences in cheesemaking, a tasting of three cheeses and a special item from Sidekick, their adjacent, cheese-centric eatery. Tip: Acme Bread Company pairs well for bread lovers.
