New to pickleball?  Here is a brief summary and history of the popular sport:

Pickleball, a paddle sport that combines elements of tennis, badminton, and ping-pong, has come a long way since its humble beginnings in the mid-1960s. Invented near Seattle, Washington, by Joel Pritchard and Bill Bell, who wanted to create a fun activity for their families to enjoy together. They started with a badminton court and replaced the rackets with solid wood paddles and the shuttlecock with a perforated plastic ball.

The sport quickly caught on. Tournaments started popping up in Washington and Oregon, and in no time, pickleball became a regional sensation.

Today, pickleball is played all over the United States and in many countries around the world. The game’s popularity has grown rapidly in recent years, especially among younger players, who enjoy the fast-paced, competitive nature of the sport. Pickleball is now recognized as one of the fastest-growing sports in North America, with more than three million players and counting. Whether you’re a beginner or a seasoned pro, there’s always room for improvement and plenty of matches to be played in the exciting world of pickleball.

What’s in a name? The game was named pickleball after the Pritchard family’s dog, Pickles, who loved chasing the ball.

For all things San Francisco Pickleball, here is a great place to start.
