The East Cut makes its Debut

Welcome to the neighborhood! #TheEastCut makes its debut in San Francisco. We’ve summarized a blog by the East Cut Community Benefit District that gives us insight on this local effort to combine the Rincon Hill and Transbay areas under a new name.

The East Cut CBD was originally formed as the Greater Rincon Hill Community Benefit District by area property owners and other stakeholders to advance the neighborhood’s quality of life.

The East Cut is San Francisco’s fastest-growing and most exciting neighborhood. For years prior to its rebirth, our area was lumped in with SOMA, South Park, South Beach, the Financial District, or the Embarcadero. But as our neighborhood redeveloped and came into its own, residents, businesses, and community organizations embraced a new identity to distinguish our home from the rest of the City.

The East Cut is a local effort to unite the Rincon Hill and Transbay areas under a new banner and identity befitting the neighborhood. They searched for a name and identity that would speak to both the rich history and dynamic future. The East Cut is the result of a community effort. Through community meetings, key informant interviews, and public board meetings, they arrived at the East Cut…together.

The name, The East Cut is inspired by the Second Street Cut, a defining moment in our history. But, the name also points to our role as the epicenter of the bustling eastern side of the city. While building a sense of place and pride today, the East Cut also harkens back to a time when our community was an indelible part of San Francisco.

The boundaries of the district encompass an area far larger than Rincon Hill, or the Transbay Transit District. The name does not, in any way, seek to remove Rincon Hill or the Transit Center from conversations about the neighborhood – both of those places are central to the neighborhood, its history and its future.

With the name comes a logo of three horizontal bars connected to form an abstract E. One represents Rincon Hill. Another represents what planners call the Transbay District. In the middle is Folsom Street, which the city plans to upgrade with wide sidewalks and landscaping to humanize the towers on either side.

Much like the City at large, the East Cut is animated by a vibrant cosmopolitan spirit that celebrates the grand reward of urban living – constant motion and evolution, serendipitous encounters, unanticipated inspiration. The East Cut has evolved from a colorful and rich history to epitomize the dynamic future of San Francisco.
