Bay Bridge Lights

Take an evening walk along the waterfront and you’ll see something magical, as lights installed on the Bay Bridge, known as The Bay Lights, come to life in a dynamic display of artistry.

The Bay Lights is a site-specific monumental light sculpture and generative art installation on the western span of the San Francisco–Oakland Bay Bridge, designed by world-renowned artist Leo Villareal. In 2013 the monumental artwork flickered to life as a temporary display for the iconic Bay Bridge’s 75th anniversary. Response to The Bay Lights is so far reaching and profound that it has lit a path beyond itself. The immense love for the lights inspired ILLUMINATE to successfully lead the effort to maintain them as a permanent installation, gifted to the State of California, on January 30, 2016 at 7:25 pm and remain forever brilliant.

San Francisco’s Bay Lights is the world’s largest light sculpture spanning 1.8 miles wide and 500 feet high of 25,000 sparkling, white, energy-efficient LED lights fastened across the bridge’s 300 vertical cables on the north side of the western span of the bridge, between Yerba Buena Island and San Francisco. The lights are made of durable materials to withstand the bay’s cool, moist winds. This dynamic computer-controlled light sculpture creates patterns and variations for a constantly-changing show.

When the lights go down in the city, the glittering sculpture turns on, transforming the span into a mesmerizing light show. It could easily be the best show in town and can be seen from anywhere along the Embarcadero. Spy the lights from the waterfront along Embarcadero Street near the Ferry Building and from the end of Pier 13, less than a mile from Jasper. You can also walk out to the end of Pier 14 for a closer look.

Extend your evening and take in some of the city’s most iconic views of the Bay Bridge as you dine in style at Coqueta, EPIC Steak, Slanted Door and Waterbar, under a mile from Jasper.
